Deborah Fazenbaker honored for rape crisis work

Ashtabula-Each year the Ohio Coalition of Sexual Assault recognizes a rape crisis employee who makes outstanding contributions to the field of crisis intervention and prevention. For the second year in a row, the coalition selected a Homesafe Rape Crisis employee for this honor.

The group previously recognized Mary Wofford, victim advocate. This year they named Deborah Fazenbaker as Ohio's Most Outstanding Rape Crisis Employee. The award was made at the coalition's three-day annual conference October 17-20. Fazenbaker qualified because of her efforts to serve diverse populations. The coalition encourages service to all people and looks for employees who strive to meet that need. OCOSA honored Fazenbaker this year because of her work with three distinct populations.

As director of Homesafe Rape Crisis, in Ashtabula, Fazenbaker assisted Family and Children First Council in developing cross training for the community to better enable them to work with and understand the Latino culture. The program prepared for the annual migrant influx of nursery workers. Fazenbaker hoped to ease the transition and believed that the community could respond more appropriately if it understood the

Latino culture and traditions.

As a second minority population, Fazenbaker began working with members of the Kent State-Ashtabula Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Union. She attended their board meeting and researched ways to better serve lesbian and gay male sexual assault survivors. As part of that work, Fazenbaker developed helpful materials for the Homesafe Rape Crisis web site. She also trained a lesbian Crisis Team member who is available on request.

Fazenbaker also serves a third diverse group: women incarcerated in the county jail. Recent studies show that rape survivors often end up in jail because of the way they struggle to cope with their trauma. Fazenbaker hopes that incarcerated females will recognize the relationship between their lifestyle and current jail experience. She wants to effect a change to detour the inmates off the road to Marysville and back on to the road of success.

The Ohio Coalition of Sexual Assault praised Fazenbaker for her efforts with these three programs and populations.

Fazenbaker took the position as director of Homesafe Rape Crisis in February 1998. She is a graduate of Hiram College and Leadership Ashtabula.
